Barnsley Park Run 23.3. Snowy?
Our Kelvin and Steve Sanders turned up for the Barnsley Park Run. I'm not sure what the conditions were like in Locke Park...
Barnsley Park Run - a few pointers!
The cafe
The cafe's been doing toast and tea/coffee for £1 for the last couple of weeks and will be adding porridge, fruit and tea/coffee for £2 this week. This is a great move forward for us all so please, let's support them as they wouldn't normally open during the Winter on a Saturday and are opening up just for us. So why not stay and have a cuppa and some breakfast after your run.Don't forget your barcode #dfyb
It was easy in the old days when there were only a few people running round Locke Park but as the numbers grow it becomes more difficult to add runners to the results if they don't have a barcode so, as you'll have seen in the recent parkrun newsletter, "No barcode, no time". It's easy to get multiple copies just follow the link on the weekly newsletter that drops into your inbox print them off and distribute them amongst your bags, coats, glovebox etc. And if you do forget your barcode and run anyway please don't forget to take a token and get it scanned as your time will have been recorded on the stopwatch when you cross the finish line. You won't get a time recorded against your name but it does make the results so much easier to process when tokens match up with times.Which leads me into...
...don't forget to keep left on the last lap
Recently we've had a few runners crossing the line to the right of the finish which is causing difficulties for us with the stop watch as we don't always know that you have finished, we had an example this week when someone ran behind the timekeeper got a finish token but we hadn't stopped the clock for them. We sorted it out but it takes time when we'd rather be having toast and a coffee. So in future unless you cross the line properly the clock won't be stopped and you won't get a token until you have crossed the line. So don't forget AT THE END OF THE 3RD LAP KEEP LEFT!We really try and keep rules to a minimum but these little things really do help us with processing the results.
EDALE SKYLINE UPDATE - SATURDAY
Edale Skyline: RACE CANCELLED
After liaising with Edale MRT and Edale Valley locals this morning
the situation is that road travel is nearly impossible throughout the
Hope and Edale valleys.
Even parking would now be extremely difficult even on flat ground, which is very limited in the first place.
PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL.
We had left this decision until today to give us the maximum chance of being able to react to any situations. But the amount of snow (30cm+ overnight in the valleys) is beyond our control.
There is obviously stil a lot of work to do today. We will make an announcement about what happens next soon.
It is incredibly disappointing to have to call the race off, but I am sure that people will understand why there is no other option.

Post Delay
Sorry for the delay in POSTS this week. We decided to take a short break on the Northumberland Coast. As you can see, the weather was BRACING!
It wasn't all bad...
A brilliant pub with micro-brewery next door. Squid Ink was a nice brew!
Read all about it here...
Edale Skyline Anyone?
A statement for those who are weighing up travelling and concerned about scoring FRA championship points...
I am the Race Organiser for the Edale Skyline race, this is my sole responsibility and I'm doing everything I can to make it happen as safely as possibly. I have made it clear (after liaising with Edale MRT and others) that if the Edale valley Road is open then the event will be on.
It has been clearly communicated (both today and previously) to me that championship status should in no way interfere with my organisation of the event. I have absolute confidence in the systems and people who will be monitoring and marshaling the race.
Ultimately if the results are unrepresentative (for example 200 runners from Sheffield as no one else can get over the Pennines) then the FRA will have make a call on whether it can still be considered reasonable for the Edale Skyline to be 'a counter in the English championships' they could then identify another event later in the year.
So, if your local road conditions make travel risky or uncertain you should exercise personal responsibility and NOT TRAVEL.
If, based on the MWIS forecast you do not have absolute confidence in your fitness, running ability and mountain craft you should exercise personal responsibility and NOT TRAVEL.
Hope that is helpful, cheers all...

Martyn's Weekly Round Up (8)
Penistone
Footpath Runners & AC organised the Yorkshire Vets Cross Country
Championships at Wentworth Castle last Saturday. Although the
weather was fine, the wet weather preceding the event made the course muddy in
places making it a good test over the 10K course for the
Championship. Mike Egner had a great run and won the vet 55
category, finishing in 6th place overall in the vet 50 to 69
race. Along with Mick Quinn and Steve Storey, Mike also led
the Club to the first team medals in that race in the vet 50 to 59
category. Steve Frith, Dave Needham and Bob Innes ran in the
same race and took the third team medals in the vet 60 to 69 category.
In the Ladies 5K race, Nicky Spinks finished as 2nd vet 45, finishing in
11th place overall. Results were Ladies 5K race : 11, N
Spinks 21-55; 44, S Clough 26-03; 58, A Lightowler 27-20. Men
vet 50 to 69 10K Race : 6, M Egner 38-56; 17, M Quinn 41-14; 21, S Storey 41-45;
46, S Frith 45-51; 68, D Needham 51-46; 70, B Innes 51-55. Men vet
35 to 49 10K Race : 12, D Kilpin 39-43; 28, M Law 42-54; 31, G Dean 43-53; 37, R
Clough 44-57.
Sarah Sykes travelled down to Mid Wales to compete in the Rhayder 20 Mile
Road Race and broke the Clubs Lady vet 40 Club Record for that distance,
finishing in 127th position in 2-50-39. Two other Lady members
also competed in the event, Sarah Jones-Morris finishing 218th in 3-20-11 and
Lisa Taylor 239th in 3-27-07.
The popular Hull 20 only attracted two members this year. Dave
Needham ran his second race of the weekend and took the first vet 65 prize,
finishing in 173rd place in 2-38-52. Paul Gee was 137th in
2-33-38.
Two of the Ladies ran in the South Yorkshire Half Marathon with Lisa Ross
finishing 155th in 1-53-51 and Judith Webb 230th in 2-13-20.
Barnsley Boundary
Hello All,
Here is a notice about the Barnsley Boundary Relay. Please let me
know if you are interested and this is open to everyone who would like to
take part as we can have as many teams as we want. Look on the Barnsley Boundary Facebook page for more details or ask those who know it
well.
We need to get teams organised with enough time for people to get to
know the routes. Group recces will be arranged so don't worry about doing
it alone.
A notice will go up at the club as well.
Teresa and NickShort Runs?
Kim Porteous is going to lead a 3 to 4 mile very steady run on Thursday
evening for new Members or those who do not feel able to set off on the longer
run.
It will start from Penistone Church Football Ground at
7.00pm so that they arrive back roughly the same time as
the other group.
If you are interested in joining this group, just turn up for the 7.00 pm
start.

Yorkshire Vets X Country
I'd bumped into Mike Egner on the Stocksbridge bypass the other week. Neither of us were driving, we just happened to be travelling in opposite directions. He'd been on the moors and I was about to climb up to North America Farm. Persuading me to enter the YVAA X Country was his aim and never being able to say no, I said - "Yes!"
I enjoy the course round Wentworth, though I was disappointed that the second climb had been abandoned and it was a four lap race instead. Luckily, the faster lads were in a race of their own and the chances of being lapped had receded somewhat. Just the odd run since Pocklington, so it was a case of damage limitation and hopefully, Bob, Dave and myself might do something in the team event. You have to be in it to win it as they say. Only ONE M60 turned up for the Spen 20 last week. ONE! Ah well, I should have got myself there and had a go.
Number on the front of your vest and your age on the back of it. It makes you feel good when you pass someone older but not so good when the roles are reversed. I tried to keep up with Kev Yewlett from Holmfirth but fell behind after the first lap. Had a bit of a battle with Ray from Halifax V65 and a lad (V60) from Bingley. Each time we came to the climb back to the start, I'd make progress on them but the flat allowed them to push ahead of me. Last lap and they seemed to have dropped behind on the climb and unable to keep up for the final tour of Wentworth. My lap times were: 11:02 11:38 11:44 11:26 Pleased that I didn't fall away at the end. First lap is always a difficult one to judge.
Mike Egner won the V55 cat and he was well supported by Steve Storey and Mick Quinn to take the team prize.
Well done to Nicky for coming 2nd in her age category and to Sarah and Annie for making up a team!

Not sure if we are awarded a prize for 3rd place. I'm sure that someone will let me know. Even though you might be well down the field, every position counts.
