Ice Cold Training

 Keep on Training!

Upon retiring from the noble profession of teaching, I received a wonderful leaving present. I can assure you that I had no knowledge of what it might be, or influenced anyone in any way as to what type of pressie I would like.
Being rather slow with anything technical AND being a bloke, I put the instructions to one side and made a determined effort to work out all the functions.
It's a great piece of kit, though I don't use it on every run and I'd never use it in a race situation.

The best feature is the ability to let me know how long I've been working in each ZONE. My training has altered due to the feedback from it. I am trying to spend more time in Zone 2 and 3 than 4 or 5.
Click on the link below and see what you think.

It was a warm up start to Hartcliffe and then a 5k icy blast to Back Lane and Oxspring Lane plus warm down.

If you click on the post title, Keep on Training, under BLOG ARCHIVE - January, then you can post any comments. They won't appear straight away as I'll need to moderate them for people who might abuse this facility.
Cheers.

Off-road or just off my head?

How good are these?

Thought that it was time that I did a bit more off-road !

I can't remember the last time I ran up to Cut Gate... two years ago? I suppose that I should at least have a go at The Mickleden Straddle;  pack in at the top of the run and just make my way back to the barn.
Being a Yorkshireman; I am always on the lookout for a bargain. Start Fitness are selling these off for under £30! Has anyone actually bought a pair of these? They are selling them at 2 for £55 today. I just need someone else who has size 11 feet or maybe they don't care if sizes are different...

Trigger Memories

I'm looking for people's high points and low points of the Trigger race. Even just a few lines from you would be brilliant!

"How far did you say there was to go?"

Tigger Tor

Make sure that you are ready for the first championship race of 2013. Sort out your kit on Friday or Saturday. Don't leave it while Sunday morning and find that something is missing.

Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment:
  1. Windproof whole body cover.
  2. Other body cover appropriate for the weather conditions.
  3. Map and compass suitable for navigating the course.
  4. Whistle
If you turn up without the correct gear, then you may not be allowed to race. The last thing you want to do, is to be up on the moors and freezing cold. Ignore any Dark Peak or Pennine runners who are wearing shorts and NO VEST! They are totally mad! Best of luck to everyone who enters.
Remember to send in any "memories" of the race as soon as you have recovered. Photos?

Training in the Snow!

To train or not to train?

It's that time of year when most people have a target race to train for. Whether it's the London Marathon or the Liversedge Half, this weather doesn't help we runners to stick to any schedule we may have put together ourselves or copied from a web site/magazine.
What training have YOU managed  to do over the last few weeks? Fell runners will be loving this, although drifts can prove difficult to wade through. The Totley race on Sunday will no doubt be energy sapping to say the least. The weather for the weekend will probably result in a mixture of thick slush, mud and the occasional snowdrift to contend with.
Alex and myself have been out for a long run each Sunday, basing it on time on feet rather than a set time per mile. There has been little chance of any speed work with the paths and roads difficult to cope with. I can see us both "doing" personal worsts for the 13.1 miles on the 10th February. Most of our work has been along the Trans Pennine Trail which has provided us with some reasonable surfaces to run on. We have seen a good number of runners from local clubs using this facility to aid their training.
What are you managing to do at the moment? Let me know and I'll post it on the BLOG.

Barnsley Park Run

Cheap and Cheerful

This Saturday, January 26th, sees the second anniversary of the Barnsley Park Run. Quite a few members have taken part in this tough little 5k race around the paths of Locke Park. Not really PB potential but it is a good training run as well as being an extremely sociable event.
Runners of all abilities take part each Saturday and no-one is made to feel out of place. The marshals encourage every single participant and make sure that even the steadiest of runners feels confident to turn out again the following week!

Stats:

David Horsfall has completed 42 Park Runs

Andy Swift is the fastest club member with 17:13

Julie Buckley  easily heads the Age graded league with 93.04%

Just a few more runners turning up and we'd overtake Barnsley AC and Kingstone!
Not sure about the weather on Saturday. Friday's snow flurries could cause a bit of chaos on the roads.

Last week's Park Run news makes interesting reading:

Barnsley parkrun Event number 103 – 19th January 2013

Oh ye of little faith, who said Barnsley parkrun wouldn't take place? Well it nearly didn't, the key was getting Alan and Jane to the start line in order to do the timing! 7:50 Saturday morning it was confirmed, Barnsley parkrun was on. And what a fabulous parkrun it was, 16 hardy runners managed to make the start and 5 even hardier volunteer marshals made sure the event happened.

An account of the first park run..

Barnsley parkrun Off To A Flyer

24JA2011
Runners at the first Barnsley parkrun
Runners from across England got Barnsley parkrun off to a flying start whena field of 79 runners took part in the initial event at Locke Park. As well as being well supported by local running clubs (20 plus Barnsley Harriers were in the starting line-up), participants came from as far afield as Eastbourne, Stowmarket, Lincoln and Nottingham.
The 3 lap course began with .5k on the flat, and a .5k climb to Locke Park Tower, the highest point in Barnsley before a .5 k descent towards the finish. The consensus of opinion, from veterans of the parkrun circuit is that the Barnsley parkrun is one of the most challenging and therefore rewarding. Locals might say 'it's not as hard as a shift down pit!'
The course is run on well maintained tarmac paths and is permanently marked with yellow arrows in the trees and on the ground, so it's easy to run the course on non-event days.
First event winner was Ian Kimpton of Lincoln Wellington AC in an impressive 15:56, John Broom representing Barnsley Harriers took second place in 18:16. Steve Darby (Unattached) placed third in a time of 19:34.
First woman was Dawn Broom of Barnsley Harriers in a time of 20:24, 16 seconds ahead of Lesley Leggett (Denby Dale Travellers). Jenny Lingrell, of Barnsley Harriers (22:08) was third.
